May 2014 - Below are links to letters to Congress from the WWII veterans or their widows who homesteaded in the Tulelake Basin, found on our HOMESTEADER Page. They were written in 2001 after our U.S. government denied irrigation water to these of The Greatest Generation, after promising irrigation water to them and their heirs. Within a year, the National Academy of Science deemed the shutoff "Unjustified."

Tulelake Marine injured in Iraq, H&N 4/29/07

"I'm Tired" by Joe Repya, Lieutenant Colonel, U. S. Army 101st Airborne Division, followed by an interview, posted 4/18/07 "I'm tired that so many ignore the bravery of the Iraqi people to go to the voting booth and freely elect a Constitution and soon a permanent Parliament. I'm tired of the so called 'Elite Left' that prolongs this war by giving aid and comfort to our enemy, just as they did during the Vietnam War."

MOVE AMERICA FORWARD, 3/25/07 Most of the Klamath Basiin was settled by veterans, whose parents and grandparents were veterans, and whose children and grandchildren are veterans. They believe in what they did not only in settling our basin and growing food, but also in their service in the wars to defend freedom. Some Americans have formed a group to defend and honor our country and our veterans. They sent us the latest anti-war, anti veteran, and anti-American protest. "...Steven & Virginia Pearcy hanged a U.S. soldier in effigy from their home by a noose - the helmet stuffed with an American flag crumbled into a ball.  Now we've seen the pictures from an anti-war protest in Portland, Oregon where anti-war activists burned not only the American flag, but also burned an American soldier in effigy."

A Soldier's Christmas Poem by Michael Marks on December 7th, 2000, sent to KBC by Jeff Giles, soldier in Iraq, posted 11/20/06, "...Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret, 'Just tell us you love us, and never forget, To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone, To stand your own watch, no matter how long...' " The works of Mr. Marks have been featured in the Washington Times,  hang in the Titan Missile Museum, and are featured on the International War Veteran's Poetry Archive.

Stephanie's grandfather Woodie Chambers, a WWII veteran, won a homestead in 1949, a thank you for defending freedom.  As he and his son are beginning a farm season with no assurance that our government will allow us to irrigate, his granddaughter Stephanie is in Iraq, serving her country along with several brave young heroes from the Klamath Basin.  "She missed (her son's) first birthday, and now she may miss his first walk, his first words." 	This is Sgt Stephanie Loghry from Tulelake.  Our sons and daughters are in Iraq,  risking their lives so we might be free.  On the home front, our freedom is being taken.   We must not let their service and lives, and those of our fathers, be in vain.    We must preserve their gift at all costs (see story at bottom of page)
