Karuk Tribe advances Yreka casino proposition

by LACEY JARRELL, Herald and News 12/12/13

The Karuk Tribe moved one step closer to opening a casino last week when California Gov. Jerry Brown signed the Tribe’s Gaming Compact, according to a press release.

The Tribe hopes to break ground for the Yreka, Calif., casino this summer.

“The timing couldn’t be better,” Karuk Chairman Buster Attebery said in the release. “This area is in dire need of jobs and economic development.”

The Siskiyou County casino is projected to create 350 jobs for tribal members and non-Indians and will be developed in two phases. Phase One consists of a 36,000-square-foot gaming facility, a restaurant and on-site parking. Phase Two will incorporate more gaming areas, a hotel and additional parking, according to the news release.

The Tribe’s goal is for the project to boost economic opportunities for everyone in the region.

“We are committed to hiring local vendors and businesses when possible. We see this project as a major economic driver for generations to come,” Attebery said.

The next steps in the process will include bringing the Compact before the California State Legislature to be ratified and also completing intergovernmental agreements with the city of Yreka, Siskiyou County and the California Department of Transportation.

A public comment period regarding the casino ends Dec. 27.
