Questions about Basin water issues continue

letter to the editor, Herald and News by Karen Walther, Klamath Falls 10/28/14

In response to Sunday’s H&N View: In reading and listening to the Basin Water Wars ever since the Environmental Protection Agency began protecting the sucker fish, I have a few observations and questions.

Birds: This revolves around a few fish that have been listed by the EPA, to the exception of all other creatures. The eliminated reservoirs provide for fish, deer, elk, raccoons, beavers, otters, etc… not to mention, birds. This is the Pacific Flyway. Literally millions of birds of hundreds of species stop to rest and eat the algae, bugs and minnows on their twice yearly migrations.

Water certainty: There will be little to none, as there will be just a river running by. Nothing stored for future need. No water to recharge ground water for wells.

Energy: No cheap electricity generated by the dams. Energy costs will go sky high. Yes, it will cost billions to relicense or remove the dams, but Pacific Power has been charging its customers for several years to pay for it.

Jobs: No farming, no wells, no towns. Why? I suggest you Google Agenda 21. See how far it has progressed in our Basin. Do you really want this to happen? If you do, then continue fighting for the Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement and the like.

Other costs to humans: Homes, farms, recreation, wells, irrigation, flood control (I know, climate change dictates we’ll never flood again —ha-ha), and way of life.
