Daniel Seale Crawford, 89, passed away in Klamath Falls, Ore., on Feb. 20, 2012.

A service of love and tribute will be held at O’Hair Funeral Chapel on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Merrill I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

The oldest son of Daniel Martin and Eddie May Crawford, Dan was born in Taft, Calif., on Feb. 1, 1923.

In 1938, his family drew a homestead in Tulelake, Calif., where he met the girl next door, Ardina Cox. In 1943, they were married and began farming in the Tulelake and Merrill areas. In Dan’s own words, he was a “lousy farmer” so, against the advice of many, Dan began a career in agricultural journalism, working for the Tulelake Reporter. It was an occupation born out of necessity, but Dan made it work. He used his love of photography and writing to land an editing job in Gering, Neb.

Due to long hours and young children at home, Dan left the job and moved back to Tulelake. Jobless once again, he struck out on his own and created Spudman, a monthly magazine focused on the potato industry. Through his years working with Spudman, he partnered with Paul and Barbara Tremaine and started Craft Printers to aid in the magazine’s production, started Sunshine Travel Agency with his wife to promote agricultural tours around the world and, in addition, was a partner in KLAD radio.

In 1977, Dan sold the magazine and interests in the various businesses and was completely content in retiring until finding the game of golf. Loving the game and hating the drive from Tulelake to Klamath Falls, he built a golf course on his property outside of Tulelake and, in 1981, Indian Camp Golf Course was born. After nearly two decades of running the business, off and on, he finally retired and his son-in-law Terry Alcorn took over the business.

In his retirement, Dan traveled with Ardina throughout the world and worked on organizing his lifetime of photographs, which were recently donated to the University of California at Davis archives.

He was preceded in death by Ardina, his wife of 67 years, in 2010.

He will be missed by his surviving brother Malcolm and wife Londa; son and daughter-in-law Charley and Patti Crawford; daughter and son-in-law Stephanie and Terry Alcorn; grandchildren and their spouses Adam Alcorn , Alex Alcorn, Scott and Amy Crawford, Jamie and Johanna Crawford, and Monique Taoras; great-grandchildren Austin, Beau, Cole, Ashley, Larissa, Nicholas, Nautica, Charlie, and Cody; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
