Preparing for Climate Change: Presentation at OIT October 25th

10.21.2010

The public is invited to a free presentation “Preparing for Climate Change in the Klamath Basin” on Monday, October 25, 2010 from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at Oregon Institute of Technology’s College Union building, Mt. Mazama meeting room. The presentation is given by the National Center for Conservation, Science, and Policy, the Oregon Institute of Technology Sustainability Committee, Oregon Tech Environmental Sciences Program, and the Oregon Renewable Energy Center.

Representatives from the Climate Leadership Initiative will present findings from a series of workshops held in the Klamath Basin in the summer of 2009. The research explores how climate change will affect local communities and natural resources of the Klamath Basin. The research also addresses how to prepare for climate change in the areas of economic development, water quality and quantity, invasive plants, forest management, agriculture, and public health and safety.

Many impacts from climate change are already apparent, such as an increasing average global temperature, rising sea levels, earlier snow melt, loss of snow pack, and changing precipitation patterns and storm frequency.

The presentation will highlight preparation strategies that will alleviate climate change stresses to both natural systems and communities.

A question and answer period and discussion will follow the presentation. To review a copy of Preparing for Climate Change in the Klamath Basin, visit http://climlead.uoregon.edu/.
