(Chiloquin) Dam vote tallied, but results not out

Pete Bourdet, a district member and negotiator with the federal government, said the district's board needs to ratify the vote before it can be made public. The board meets Tuesday night.

"That's the way it was set up," he said.

Removal of the 91-year-old concrete dam on the Sprague River near Chiloquin has passed through federal hurdles and has the support of legislators, environmental groups and the Klamath Tribes. But it is owned by the irrigation district, and its patrons have the final say in the dam's fate.

During Friday's vote the district members weighed whether the board should keep discussing the dam's possible removal with the federal government. Polls were open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Crater Lake Real Estate office near the intersection of Highway 97 and the Crater Lake Highway. There are 86 members in the about 5,300-acre district.
