Gail Whitsett is qualified for seat

Herald and News letter to editor by Pearl Juris, Klamath Falls 5/6/12

Upon learning that state Rep. Bill Garrard was retiring, two thoughts immediately came to me. One: Thanks, Bill, for the many years of loyal service you have given the citizens of the Klamath Basin. Second: You certainly deserve some time to relax and enjoy our beautiful Klamath country.

Then I wondered: Who will step into his shoes? I was delighted to discover that Gail Whitsett was there, willing and able.

She has many assets to contribute to serving us.

Having served seven years as chief of staff for Oregon state Sen. (and husband) Doug Whitsett, she already knows how the political machinery in Salem functions. She also is acquainted with the other senators and representatives serving there. She has served on many committees while in Salem. This understanding and experience will save valuable time that otherwise would be necessary for orientation to the legislative process.

Her educational background provides a firm foundation in these days of ecological problems. Her decisions will be based on years of practical experience.

She can identify with our small businesses as an owner and manager of a small, private-sector business.

She is a strong supporter of education, having taught and substituted in elementary, middle and high school arenas. She knows and can identify problems that need assistance and intervention.

She listens to what our citizens say.

• The priorities she has identified are: creating jobs and increasing employment opportunities, maintaining public safety, improving quality in education, utilizing our natural resources and forests, and supporting veterans and the elderly.

There is more I could add, but space allotments restrict me.

I am proud to be a Gail Whitsett supporter. As you learn more about her, I feel confident you’ll be one, too.
